How to Apply Glitter using The Epoxy Method

Adding glitter to a stainless steel tumbler with epoxy is a great way to personalize and add some sparkle to your drinkware. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to apply glitter to a stainless steel tumbler with epoxy:

Materials you will need:

  • A stainless steel tumbler
  • Fine glitter or chunky glitter (your choice)
  • Epoxy resin
  • Mixing cups
  • Stirring sticks
  • Disposable gloves
  • Respirator mask
  • Sandpaper (220 grit)
  • Painter's tape
  • Blow dryer or heat gun (optional)

Step 1: Prep your tumbler Before you start, clean the tumbler thoroughly and dry it completely. Then use the sandpaper to scuff the surface of the tumbler to help the epoxy adhere better. Clean the tumbler again to remove any dust or debris.

Step 2: Prepare your workspace Set up your workspace in a well-ventilated area. Wear disposable gloves and a respirator mask to protect yourself from the fumes. Cover your work surface with a plastic sheet or paper to protect it from drips.

Step 3: Tape off the areas you don't want to cover in epoxy Use painter's tape to mask off any areas on the tumbler that you don't want to be covered in glitter, such as the bottom or the top rim. This will ensure that you get clean lines and prevent any epoxy from getting where it shouldn't be.

Step 4: Mix the epoxy Mix the epoxy resin according to the manufacturer's instructions. Usually, this involves mixing equal parts of resin and hardener in a mixing cup and stirring them together thoroughly for several minutes.

Step 5a (Glitter IN Epoxy): Add glitter to the epoxy Once you have mixed the epoxy, add glitter to it. You can use fine glitter or chunky glitter, or mix different sizes and colors of glitter to create a unique look. Mix the glitter into the epoxy thoroughly, making sure there are no clumps. Hack'd Glitter is a perfect choice for mixing glitter IN epoxy! GO TO STEP 6.

Step 5b (Glitter ON Epoxy) Apply a very thin layer of epoxy. Apply a generous coat of glitter to the wet epoxy surface. Shaker off any excess glitter. SKIP STEP 6.

Step 6: Apply the epoxy to the tumbler Using a brush or a stir stick, apply the epoxy to the tumbler. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Spread the epoxy in a thin, even layer, making sure to cover the entire surface. Be careful not to let the epoxy drip or pool.

Step 7: Let the epoxy cure After you have covered the entire tumbler with glitter epoxy, set it aside to cure. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for curing time. Typically, epoxy will take about 24 hours to cure completely.

Step 8: Remove the painter's tape After the epoxy has cured, remove the painter's tape carefully to reveal clean lines.

Step 9: Optional - add another layer of epoxy If you want a smoother and more durable finish, you can apply another layer of clear epoxy over the glitter epoxy. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and applying the epoxy.

Step 10: Optional - Use a heat gun or blow dryer If you notice any bubbles in the epoxy, use a blow dryer or heat gun to gently heat the surface and pop the bubbles. Be careful not to overheat the epoxy or melt the glitter.

And that's it! Now you have a beautiful, personalized, glittery stainless steel tumbler!
